Brief History

Located in the heart of Athens’ East State Street/Elmwood Historic District, 227 E. State St. stands at the end of Elmwood’s “Professors’ Row” and the corner of E. State Street. The two-story, brick Queen Anne was built in 1912 and features a wrap-around porch, transom over the front door, and companion brick garage. An original stained glass window graces the home’s south side, while stained glass windows were added by artist Cristina Gomez in the 1990s to the numerous basement windows. Two-story bays, topped by pedimented gables with decorative windows and shingles, project from the front, north, and south facades. A hipped roof with deep eaves covers the central block of the house, while a side gabled roof covers the rear section.
