Brief History

Nelsonville was established by Daniel Nelson in 1814. Josiah Coe, married to Mary Ann Coe, purchased 500 acres of land in Nelsonville and established the first flour mill shortly thereafter in 1816. It later became known as Robbins Mill, and in 1840 an expansive two-story residential house on the property was built. Josiah lived in this house with his many children, including Harriet Coe, who married James Robbins, and they renovated the home in 1893 by lifting the home onto a sandstone foundation, creating a wrap-around porch, adding an additional third story ball room, and transforming it into an estate. Other additions on the property included but are not limited to a Carriage Stable, a chicken coop, several barns, and an orchard.
