Brief History

Dr. John R Sprague and his medical practice at 20 Main Streetis a large part of history in the small town of Chauncey. 18 Main St was his home, where heand his wifeAnna Bernadine Devlin lived, and 20 Main St was the joined building where Dr. Sprague had his medical office. This office is connected by a small walkway and is made up of a primarily brick. Their home at 18 Main, with 5 bedrooms, 2 baths, sunrooms, a grand entry, beautiful hard wood flooring, and historical transom windows spread over 2,500 sq ft of historiclivingmade it one of Chauncey’s grand homes at the center of the Village.

Athens County Infirmary opens to provide care to Athens county.A fire destroyed the original buildingthat was built, then in 1905 a new building was constructed with the capacity to house up to one hundred people. The facility continued to operate until 1997 when it was closed and become home to Social Services in Athens County.

Athens Lunatic Asylum opens (now known as The Ridges). Within two years of opening, it was renamed The Athens Hospital for the Insane. It was also later named as the Athens Asylum, the Athens State Hospital, the Southeastern Ohio Mental Health Center, and more.
